    Hi Andrejs,

A great post on these types of cameras. I used to have security cameras everywhere and at all of my locations, and it used to be so expensive to get the power feeds and data cables back to a dedicated or integral server. Never mind the cost of the hardware.

Now, you need neither, which makes installation so much simpler. It would be just the considerations for theft of the hardware and vandalisation that would need careful planning. But with no wires and no fixed position for any server being used it makes everything so much easier to tweak if needed.

Not only are these eco-friendly options – but where I live we have routinely had issues with ‘mains’ power.   A solar powered camera system is a great option in this scenario – providing you have of course enabled some UPS/generator for your your collection PC.   Have you considered an offering for this case?

I am interested in how well the solar cells work – do they maintenance to ensure ongoing operation (problem I have had wit some older solar powered devices) ?

    Reply
    1. Andrejs

Absolutely, that’s a great point! Solar-powered camera systems really shine in areas with unreliable mains power—pairing them with a UPS or backup generator for the collection PC creates a solid, resilient setup.

As for your question on solar cell maintenance—yes, it’s definitely something to keep in mind. Modern solar panels are generally quite low-maintenance, but to keep performance optimal, it’s a good idea to clean them periodically (especially if you’re in a dusty or tree-covered area). Dirt, leaves, or snow can reduce efficiency over time. We’ve seen improved reliability and durability in newer models compared to some older devices, but it’s still wise to do occasional checkups.

Offering a solution tailored to off-grid or unstable-grid environments is a fantastic idea—we’re definitely looking into expanding our options in that direction. Thanks for the insight!

I have a question about the solar powered cameras.  I know the cameras have to have a battery to charge during the daylight for night time operation.  Does the solar panel charging have an effect on the batteries, such as shortening their life, like a phone does?  The reason I ask is that if you stick a phone on a charger and the battery is not fully depleted, the frequent charging tends to shorten the life of a battery vs letting the battery deplete completely.  I was just curious if these batteries in these cameras are the same way.  Thanks in advance for your reply.

    1. Andrejs

Great question! From what I understand, the batteries used in most solar-powered cameras are designed a bit differently than regular phone batteries. They use smart charging technology to manage the charge cycles more efficiently, preventing overcharging and helping extend battery life. Unlike phones, these systems are built to handle frequent “top-off” charging during the day. That said, extreme temperatures and constant heavy use can still wear them down over time. Overall, though, solar charging shouldn’t significantly shorten the battery life if the system is well-designed. Hope that helps!
