Hello, Paul and thanks for the comment!

You know, researching information for the new article I became a little smarter, but even the most important, if for someone it also helps. None of us know everything even in his familiar niche.

I am still learning and things I learned are real, I hope.

I have had a GPS for years no and I have traveled a lot using it and it has never led me astray Driving through a strange city is so easy when you have a GPS and it really is a must if you are caravaning. I have always used a TomTom and would not change it for anything else. Garmin is one of the top brands but I think TomTom is easier to program. Do you really need a different GPS for your caravan? I thought the only one that is different is one for a motor bike and that was only because of the greater vibration..

Thank You, Margaret, to stopping by!
I guess you used to travel in the USA or Canada, where roads are wider and bridges are higher. Traveling Europe a situation is more sensitive. Not knowing e.g. clearance under the bridge on a beautiful country road you could easily get stuck for long time and extra $$.
Especially for caravan and motorhome calculated routes let you avoid unnecessary surprises.

I have seen so many people use Garmin. I never understood why. My thoughts were like: it’s probably a good gps that’s all. By your review I don’t think I was wrong xD.
I wonder why it is hard to get TomTom if it’s so good 😐
Nice review, and thanks for sharing your opinions and thoughts.

Hi, Erika and thanks for kind words!

Regarding TomTom Go Live Camper and Caravan Sat, I even do not know what to say? I have not been in contact with TomTom but read that one Ozzie traveler tries to get an official’s response to the given device. Unfortunately unsuccessfully.

So, maybe later it will be more available to the public. A Garmin alternative is good enough.

    Hi Andre!

Thanks for your great, post about different GPS choices! It’s really a shame that we live in a world that replaces good old fashioned paper maps with electronics. That being said, I can’t argue the convenience of an automated GPS system. Now I’m certainly looking into getting one of these!

The good caravan need definitely have to be equipped with a dedicated sat nav system to avoid going into the dead end.

Hi, Andrejs. I haven’t yet got a satnav. I’d like one but I don’t have one yet. The nearest I have got to having one the the built-in GPS on my smartphone. On occasions, I have found this to be very useful, especially combined with my OSmaps app. I enjoyed reading this article. The page isn’t too overloaded with ads. I felt comfortable reading about choosing the right Sat-Nav, and I will come back and visit your website some more. Cheers!

Hello Paul and thanks for stopping by.  If you don’t want to spend for the dedicated GPS for caravan then look for smartphone app ”CoPilot Caravan Europe” for €39.99. I found it as a great application with many features and information at least for Europe. The USA version is CoPilot RV USA.

This is interesting. I thought a standard GPS unit would be just fine (and it sounds like you said it would be an OK option), but I didn’t realize there were specific GPS units just for caravans. You said the caravan sat nav units have information about rest stops and camping areas? If so, that would be SO helpful! I’m definitely going to look into that Garmin! Thanks!!

Hi Christina. When you are traveling with the caravan then not every road, tunnels and some other obstacles allow passing through. Mainly because of the height of the vehicle. Dedicated GPS for caravans inform you and calculate the route in the right way to avoid long detours.

Curious thoughts I had while reading this article. First, I am wondering if as many people are using these now with a lot of the new vehicles having built in navigation? I had a Garmin at one time, but I actually forgot about it until now. I find the mention of caravan travel interesting though. I don’t have an RV, or any type of travel vehicle, myself, so it hadn’t crossed my mind before. But now I wonder if travel vehicles are also made with built-in nav. ?  Maybe the large expensive ones. I don’t know. These GPS units would be great for any vehicle that doesn’t come with one! Thanks for the food for thought this morning! I might go find my old one now!

You can use any dedicated GPS device or smartphone app for caravan trips but do it with caution. Not every conventional cars route are available for caravan size. Actually, it is a cheaper way at least for European travelers as you can buy CoPilot Caravan Europe for €39.99 and enjoy tons of useful features.
